NTT DoCoMo announced today the 2G mova® N506iS, the world's first mobile phone to contain a flat panel display that also functions as a speaker.
The flat panel speaker emits sound by sending vibrations throughout the entire display panel. The user can hear the person on the other end by placing an ear anywhere on the panel. In addition, the speaker's use of the entire display makes audiovisual content more vivid than conventional handsets, whose speakers are located on the side of the display.
The N506iS includes the 180-degree display "reverse style™" rotation feature as well as the "shuttlekey™" function that enables telephoning, e-mailing and browsing after the handset has been opened, rotated and then closed again.
The handset makes it easy to take pictures because any of the 0 to 9 dial buttons can be used as the shutter. In addition, the camera can be activated and operated even when the handset is in the rotated position.
In addition, the handset offers TV hookup capability for viewing of photos and video. Other functions include an access reader that allows storage of information from business cards written in Japanese to the phone's address book, as well as dictionary searches for unfamiliar words.

Wouldn't the vibrations stop if you pressed your ear on the screen?

Have you ever watched a vid on a Pxx0
Its annoying cause u cant hear anything since the speakers on the back, so u cant watch and be close to the speaker at the same time.

Hmmm interesting concept! I believe Wharfdale has flat speakers, as do other high-end speaker manufacturers.
Removing the speaker element all together and incorporating it into the screen saves a few mm here and there. This will allow larger screens on smaller phones.
If this technology was on the P-series phones, it would allow an almost edge-to-edge display.
Now, with regards to the issues of whether the vibrations would stop or not when held against your face/ear... that has yet to be seen. Obviously the larger home theater flat speakers don't stop if you place your hand against them... but their drivers are much larger than the one that will be built into a mobile phone.
Another interesting technology that should find its way to mobile phones is 3M's DST touchscreen technology.

yeah ok, the issue with the speaker being on the back of the phone making it harder to hear the sound is valid but 99% of the time im watching a vid/ listening to mp3s etc ive got my headset on. front or back speakers, i wouldnt sit on a bus or train without the headset. |
