Samsung Electronics has created another industry first by developing mobile phones with a feature that automatically converts speech into text, it announced Thursday. The new models, which will initially be shipped to the U.S. market, enable people to dictate rather than type their messages.
The company said the new handsets have a better voice command function that heightens convenience. If a user directs their phone to, "Send a message to John," it will automatically search for the matching number, then, upon hearing the dictated voice message, convert it to text and transmit it.
Samsung's new cell phones will enable consumers who are not familiar with text messaging to send brief messages easily, while making the process safer for those on the move.
The latest conversion feature is applied to Samsung's SGH-P270 model, which has a camera phone that uses the European Global System for Mobile communications (GSM), and the SPH-A800 model - the first two-mega pixel camera phones introduced to the U.S. market. They are expected to debut there late next month.
The company plans to further develop its handsets' voice recognition functions, and broaden the scope to include other languages besides English.
Samsung's handsets with the new conversion feature are currently on display at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
