On a journey a car travels one way at 44 mph on the way back it is stuck behind traffic and goes only 29.3333 mph. Whats is the average speed?

The type of car is irrelavent and before anyone asks the distance is the same both ways but the question DID NOT state the actual distance |

I would say the average speed would be 36.6665 mph. The question only states two trips at 1 hour each way, so 44 add 29.333 divide 2. I think hehe :-D cya

It is one journey
One way -----> at 44 mph
the back the same way the same distance <------- 29.3333 mph
So if you want to consider time coming back would take longer as they are travelling slower!! |

Yeah, I'd go with 36.6666 too.... it's pretty logical isn't it?
It doesn't really matter how far the distance was. If you want the average of something, then you just add them all up and divide them by how many you added up.... |

Thats what I thought but think of it like this;
If the journey is say 88 miles on the way there (at 44 mph) it would take 2 hours and on the way back (at 29.333 mph) it would take 3 hours.
This makes the total journey 176 miles in 5 hours. The average speed of this is 35.2 mph.
And you can change the time to whatever but the speed always comes back to 35.2 mph
Waddya think!??!

Yes add them and then divide by two to get the avergage speed for the entire journey. This is all you can really do with the info given - ie. no distances or times taken but just the speed either way. Assuming both ways were the same distance! So 36.6665!
bra1ne> you have got a good point though so maybe that could be correct although it doesn't tell you the ditance travelled either way although even though in a mensa question I think this may be a little to complex? But i may well be wrong!

I think the question has some important information that is missing. In this case I would say both answers are correct....

I thnk bra1ne has a point here. @ed:even f u change d distnce to 44miles dat wud take u 1 hr to travel and at 29.333 mph ur travel tym back is 1.5 hrs. Thats a period of 2.5 hrs at a distance of 88 miles- that wud giv us an ave of 35.2 ryt? Anyway dats how i see it. Ü peace..
