Hi, i'm new on the forum, i have been browsing for ages trying to find answers to my questions and haven't found any, but apologies if this has been answered before and if it's stupid questions!

firstly, i ordered my K700i today, and i noticed that the latest firmware was released on 6/12 - should i expect to have this version, ie how fast is the turnover? i wonder if they update/recall existing models that haven't been sold yet - just wondering what to expect cos if i'm gonna have the old version i should maybe get hold of a sync station so i can update it.

secondly, when you update the software do your photos, memory etc get wiped? i had a problem with my T610 software and they told me that they'd have to upgrade it and i'd lose everything on the phone (sms's included too)...

anyway, any help for a beginner with not much technical expertise would be greatly appreciated! thanks...

1) The latest firmware in most SE service centers is R2AE and on the update service is R2L.
2) No it wont delete your data. In my case only the gprs settings got erased but my pics, themes, etc were intact
If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence of your attempt !!

you need to look in the service menu, it says how to do all that in the faq. so thanks for your help guys, though i have 2 opposing opinions on whether memory gets wiped!!! i guess i'll just have to wait and see what version of the firmware i have, the phone should arrive tomorrow. meanwhile, sonyericsson haven't replied to my email - don't suppose anyone knows if there are any service centres in or around colchester?

Updating via the Update Service does not wipe the memory of the phone. Your personal stuff will be intact.

If you were to use a third party solution such as Davinci or Total Multiserver then everything on the phone is wiped, but you need a T28 Service cable to use these.

or you can take it to someone like me, with tools to do this without the use of loggers or internet connection.

Because the platform sends bogus messages while charging, that is why!!!..But why this change of heart?..We sense a charger connected, oops, we will not shut down after all!!!..*********************** UI BASIC, HOLD YOUR HORSES

so i've got the phone, and it has R2L software. i've read on the thread about what each version does, but a lot of it is over my head - in your learned opinions is there any point in an average phone user such as myself going to great lengths to upgrade further? (i'd obviously have to go to a service centre and there isn't on near me...) i guess the delay in sound in answering the phone is a bit annoying, but i'm not sure what the other stuff means!! is the improved camera very noticeable? any help is of course much appreciated, i'm sure it must be mildly annoying when people who know nothing post on these forums but i figure you're the best people to ask!!

@bananamike - there's never a wrong time or question to ask on Esato

I would advise you to wait before upgrading from the R2L cause the new R2AE in SE service centres is just out recently and it would be wise to wait until all bugs are discovered.

According to one user i asked, R2AA gave better battery life, another user said R2AE is sh*t and he changed back to R2L.

There is a slightly noticeable improvement in the R2AE camera version (3.10 compared to previous 3.9). I'll search and get that thread, its there somewhere....

Check this thread for detailed firmware info -

edit : Here's the thread with the pic comparison between R2L and R2AE -

thank you - i guess there is always gonna be something new and improved, waiting won't do any harm i guess!! to be honest i can't tell much of a difference between the two camera pics (having just upgraded from T610 the k700 is a vast improvement anyway!). i shall wait and see what happens with the firmware (and then i probably won't want to upgrade in case i lose all my texts, pics etc, but either way the problem's solved!!) - thanks again!
