Are newbies put off from becoming involved in Esato because of a perceived level of 'closed ranks' by older, more established members? Is there a feeling that older members only really want to post amongst themselves or that the opinions of newbies are not valued to the same degree as those of established members? In essence, do newbies see joining Esato as 'daunting' or a 'challenge' to become a 'regular member'?

I don't think so.
Because when i first started viewing this forum and joined, all i was bothered about was getting some good information about my phone, what there is to do with my phone etc. all phone related. I didnt take notice of all the groups, top posters, veteran or even anything to do with the moderators, it all just grew on me after i joined and started posting regularly.
I reckon people join, looking forward to information and discussions abut phones but not really caring about being a top poster or whatever but they may see it as an achievement later on but not at the start. This is from my experience and most probably from other's too.

What about once you had been a member for a while? What is it difficult to 'integrate'?

solution, maybe to get rid of post count. however i seem to remember you questioning the post count a while back and it being rejected.

After being a member for a while i found it pretty easy to integrate and so have many other users we have ont he forum that havent been members for as long as a lot of others but have integrated into the forum fairly easily.
After a while you do see a challenge in front of you to get a very high post count because maybe then you will be included into the 'comnmunity' easier (this is what i felt it would be like) but after a while you realise it has got nothing to do with a high post count.
We just need to welcome our members and allow them to be heard, no matter what your oppinion of them is.
A week or two ago Meths and a few other members felt strongly about one member who was taking the piss out of a 'newbie' who had asked a 'newbie' question so the members felt the urge to fight against this because if we did that to every member then no one would want to stay on Esato if thats going to happen. After all if there were no newbie questions, the forum would be quite empty, if you get my drift. So by welcoming, not flaming, new members they will find it easy to integrate into the forum.

I enjoy reading forums and learning bout new phones here.. However being a retired military spec. ops. officer i dont like how a few of the old members are sarcastic and flame new members for asking questions.

The point raised about older members flaming newbies is quite interesting because, in my experience, I have found that it isn't usually the oldest members who do this. It seems to be a case of the new generation of veterans, le nouveaux vétérans if you will, who flame newbies in the manner Lynx69 detailed above. In fact, the actual example Lynx69 cites did involve le nouveaux vétérans and a newbie, not the 'Old Guard', le Vieille Garde or the Ancients, les Ancients.
Apologies for all the different terms, but I got rather carried away with using French in this post and I wanted to include some more beyond le nouveaux vétérans.

Going back to the exaple i showed i would like to draw you to Meths sig...
"meths: the one-man crusade against being arsey, elitist, and poncy towards new members!!!"
We all need to follow/join this crusade, croisade if you will , because it will make new members feel welcome to Esato, because when they join they 99.9% of the time want an answer to do with their phone and by being arsey, elitist, and poncy towards new members they will not get the info they need.

Find the older members much more helpful and polite when talking to new members. Learned alot from them.
