Samsung plans to produce camera phone module with its own technology starting next year. Samsung already developed 1.3m megapixel and 2megapixel CMOS image sensor.
A spokesman of Samsung said Friday, ”We recognized that there is growing need to strengthen competitiveness in testing and quality in camera phone because red-hot demand of the products.”
However, he denied some media report that Samsung will produce 500 thousand camera phone modules a month. He said,” The modules will be mainly used in tests. At the moment, we are not sure whether we would mass produce the modules.”
The spokesman said that next year, more than 80% of Samsung phones sold in Korean market will be camera phone while 50% of Samsung phones in foreign markets will have built-in camera module. .
Currently camera modules for Samsung Electornics are mainly supplied by Samsung’s affiliates such as Samsung Electricity and Samsung Techwin or Pentax. Samsung said, “If we strengthen criteria for camera modules, suppliers will have no choice but to enhance the quality.”
