Im sorry, i know this question has been asked before... many many many many times... but i never found any real help... i wanna know what extensions compress the file better than .mp3. i want to have songs on my new palm pilot ( Ipaq rx3115, which i am very very happy about, but might upgrade a little), and i havent bought a memory card yet, so i only have about 50mb right now. what program can i use to compress my mp3s and still be able to play them on windows media player?? i hope you guys understand my question, thanks much!
Its good to be back! |

You can compress them to mp4 format using dbpoweramp or some other tool.
www.dbpoweramp.com
Of course you have to download the free mp4 codec(FAAC mp4) from codec central on that site.
If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence of your attempt !! |

you can also download iTunes from www.apple.com and convert your mp3s to m4a (mp4 audio). just make sure to rename the extensions to mp4 before uploading to your ipaq. You can change the settings so that you can convert it to mono mp4 to further reduce the size of your songs.

about 14 stereo mp4s and 28 mono mp4s (acceptable quality)
edit: quality of mono is much like stereo except that there will be no left-right panning/separation effect.

dbpoweramp doesn't have that option that's why I recommended iTunes. If you don't want iTunes however you can use another software like cdex to convert your mp3s to mono before you convert them to mp4 using dbpoweramp. It may sound tedious but actually it's not as everything is automated after you make the proper settings.
edit: EastCoastStar, does your ipaq have necessary resources (codec) to play mp4 (AAC) files?

for converting to mono in cdex,
go to Options > Settings.
Make sure Encoder is set to Lame MP3 Encoder...
Use 64Kbps (I find 80Kbps better) for Bitrate Min and click the Mono radio button
Make sure under the Filename tab you set the WAV-> MP3 path correctly to where you want the output files to go.
Click OK when all settings are done.
To start converting the file just go to Convert > Re-encode Compressed Audio Files
@EastCoastStar, make sure first that your ipaq plays mp4 files otherwise all these conversions are useless.

Hmmm... then the best you can probably do is convert it to 80Kbps wma. It will reduce your 128Kbps mp3 to about 65% and still get an acceptable stereo output. You can do this with cdex too.
