OK I've been waiting for the Samsung D500 of be released on Orange. I called up Orange at the beginning of the month and they said it should be some time this month, and to call back. In the middle of this month I called again and got the same story. Finally I called on Friday thinking that it is nearly the end of the month and was told it will definitely be out before the first of December and that the new models normally become available on a Monday.

Today I called and was told no chance it’s not coming out until the end of Dec or maybe Jan. I can understand that these things do happen and phones get delayed etc... but I can understand how Orange manage to go from yes definitely before the first of Dec to maybe a month or two over a weekend?!

Rant over

You obviously haven't had this before! The UK networks are notorious for announcing incorrect release dates, though this is not entirely their fault, as it can be largely attributed to the manufacturers' delays and elongated testing periods.

The D500 is only just about to be released in generic form on O2 and Voda, so I wouldn't expect it on Orange for at least a month or so.

I only know of one phone that ever had a fixed release date anywhere in the world and that was the Nokia n-gage

firstly, while the operators do test the phones on their networks they are still limited to the distrubutors in each country for distribution and most of the time have no idea that a phone will be available until the day it actually arrives in their warehouse and even then, because its often a surprise, they then have to get their own distribution into action.

secondly, if you talk to store workers they will never really have a clue of availability until they actually receive them in store.

I have learned this over years of experience and it never changes

I agree with masseur and I just wish network staff would admit they have no clue about release dates and would stop raising people's expectations.

@absinthebri

I guess that was the point I was trying to make, life would be a lot easier if they would admit that they don't know rather that saying things like definitly before XX date, when in reality they don't know

All very well in theory, but you can imagine the conversation then:

"Hi, can you tell me when the Nokia BUL-541T is out on One2No1 please?"

"I'm sorry sir, I have absolutely no idea."

"You what?! What kind of half-arsed company are you?!!"

"Well, sir, I'm sorry but I have an inkling but we don't want to get your hopes up!"

A little exaggerated but the point is that these fictional dates doubtless arise from the "I want it yesterday" customer who demands to be given "just some idea" as to when it will be released.
