HIGH-TECH 3-D hologram phones like the one used in Star Wars could soon be installed on the high street.
Boffins in Japan claim to have developed technology for image chambers similar to the one used by Princess Leia in the film.
Trials have shown that a tiny 10-inch tall 3-D version of a person can be created in a cylindrical tube.
And developers say the same technology dubbed SeeLinder could be on the market in the near future.
It works by using a special 360-degree camera to comb fibre optics, electronics and LEDs for data in a special booth.
The tubes which cost more than £50,000 each use the information to create an image by quickly spinning slices of a person's face, just like a zoetrope does.
Professor Susumu Tachi who developed the technology with Tomohiro Endo said: "We can see the 3-D image as if it's inside the cylinder."
He added that with the device a family could have a family gathering or conference at a remote place.
