I'm afriad its a UK only service, but please read the following. It could be very useful one day!

www.menduk.org

Register on MEND today, FREE.
It is estimated over 2,000 Mobile Phones are lost or stolen every day in the U.K and 43% of personal robberies involve a mobile phone.
However what is not reported is that tens of thousands of these are recovered but due to the difficulty of tracing the owner few are returned.

Ensure YOUR details are available to the recovery agencies.
Record your ownership FREE on MEND, the only ownership registration program officially endorsed by the Police and Mobile Phone Industry.

What is MEND?
MEND is the only Mobile Industry and Police endorsed ownership registration program for mobile equipment in the UK.
It is a database of millions of pieces of mobile IT equipment registered by the items intrinsic identifiers, make, model and serial/IMEI number, and its owners contact details.

No further marking of the equipment is required.

It also holds a huge number of records of equipment that has been recovered after loss or theft, and reports of equipment that has been lost or stolen.

It is used by the major recovery agencies, including the Police and Transport For London Lost Property, to contact owners in the event that their equipment is recovered after loss or theft and to identify equipment that has been registered as lost or stolen.

By registering on MEND you greatly increase your chances of having your equipment returned quickly and safely.

What are the benefits of registration?
Create one highly confidential and secure online editable account for you and your family.

Record the details of your own and your family’s high value mobile lifestyle equipment.

Assist the recovery agencies to return your equipment quickly and safely.

Massively increase the chance of getting back both your possessions and any stored data.

Save money on replacement and insurance excesses.

Have all the details recorded to assist in reporting a crime, making an insurance claim and getting a lost/stolen mobile phone blocked across all networks.

Help reduce crime: the quick identification of the owner of property is a major deterrent to being caught in the possession of, or using, stolen equipment.

The ability to record your equipment as having been lost or stolen on a National Database, and to see if its already been recovered. This is even possible if the item was not recorded on MEND before it went missing subject to you having the correct information.

I read about this on a BBC article today. Have already registered my P900, Creative Jukebox Zen and Sony DSC Camera.

big bro is getting closer..
yeah, itīs absolutely free, no additional payments - but to keep this service free, we are happy to announce our first cooperation with guess-who, who is able to provide you with the newest information about his new product line that suits especially for you due to the information we collected about you..

Stay in contact and register your children as well as your pets, even your grandma - everything could be stolen once!

Naah - better make a list of your important items and disclose only what is absolutely necessary - rest is bull****

I didnt understand the majority of your message, but for me a key selling point of MEND is that the UK authorites have recognised this an as official database of products and their registered owners.

Imagine if you will:

Your phone gets nicked by a pikey theif git, they are pulled over and searched a while later and your/their phone discovered. The police will then cross check that IMEI on the MEND database and if your name comes up as the registered owner, you will be contacted and informed of the discovery.

Tell me how that process can happen if you've written down all your IMEI details on the back of a fag packet in your bedroom?

@frontman: why not go the other way? I keep my IMEI under my pillow until my phone gets lost, THEN I informī the police or whosoever and then the number can be stored and checked.. Itīs just my reluctance that everybody is eager to provide service combined with building complete databases of your belongings, preferences and behaviours..

I see what you're trying to avoid, another data collecting marketing firm just looking to spam you, but even with my equally scpetical mind, I fail to see whay this shouldnt be done.

If you have the patience and energy to call round numerous police forces when your mobile gets nicked and then encourage them to take your details and check on all their local arrests then good on ya.. this way, theres a recognised, official approved database in existence that the police forces across the country all use centrally to identify the owners of stolen items.

Plus its more credible. My stuff has been listed on their for ages now so if it suddenly turns up in someone elses hands, its non debatable as to whom it belongs. Basically mate, your way is how its always been. Stuff gets nicked and then you report it. Its all fairly understandable, but to me this system seems like a well thought out, easily accessible and reliable method of proving legal ownership and its there ready, waiting for the police to access it with no further inconvenience to you as a victim of crime. Dont use it if you dont want to, its not obligatory... its just there to help.

Btw, I have been listed on there for over a year, never had anything nicked yet, but also I havent received any spam or advertising either as a result. I rate them.

I'm with frontman on this.

For a start, it's a comfort that it's a .org site. But also, it's only a record of your more expensive kit, their serial numbers, and perhaps a description. It's not like your telling anyone about your taste in music/fashion, drug habits or sexual preference.....

....oops, now I think I've said too much!

I donīt think my phone is telling my sexual preferences..

I agree with you both, the idea is quite a good one, and Iīm not that reluctant as I seem to be. Nevertheless the mention of a 'cooperation' of official authorities with private companies attracts my attention; and Iīd prefer at first a nationwide database where stolen inventory can be queried by officials AND THEN a 'reverse' database where inventory is registered with before getting lost..

So long as this service isnīt available in my country I should stop making a fuss

There is no reason to suggest your details will be used to spam you, its in conjunction with the police and the government, fer gossake. So what if they have an advert or two, ALL sites do. Its a good thing, it will help people recover their rightful property they have worked hard for. Its not a case of "big brother" at all, its a case of people making an effort to cut down on crime, and the only way they can do that is to be vigilant.
