An elementary school girl was kidnapped in the Japanese city of Nara yesterday. The girl had a GPS-enabled mobile phone. At 5PM, the girl called her mom and hanged up immediately. The mother knew that she could get a map indicating where her daughter was if the daughter's cell phone was turned on. She fetched a map and found that the girl was located in a park near her house.
Later on, the kidnapper used the girl's phone to send a photo SMS message to her mother -- it said "I got your girl." That was at around 8PM. According to GPS data, the message was sent from a residential area that was 6 kilometers away from her house. Since then, it was impossible to access GPS data, which probably meant that the phone's battery run out or the phone was turned off by someone. 4 hours later, the girl was found dead near the the area indicated by the last GPS data.
This tragedy raises a question about usefulness of new tracking technologies including GPS and active RFID. Do they do anything beyond providing parents with small peace of mind? From a child's perspective, if GPS and/or active RFID tags don't make his/her life safer, what's the point in carrying them around? Makes me feel like something is missing.

Really, all these technology is being put to use in a good way. There will be some glitches in the start, but surely, murder is too much!

The killer of a 7-year-old girl in Nara last Thursday may have targeted her because she always had a cell phone hung around her neck when commuting to and from school, police sources said Monday.
The police suspect the killer was looking for a child with a cell phone to send photos to the kin by using the phone as was carried out in the case, the sources said.
Kaede Ariyama, whose body was found in Heguri, Nara Prefecture, hours after she went missing, had spoken with her mother around 1:40 p.m. on her red cell phone after getting off school around 1 p.m. Her schoolmates indicated Kaede got into a man's car soon afterward.
At that time, many pupils were around the area but none of them was approached by the man, the sources said.
A photo of Kaede, together with a text message which read, "I've got your daughter," was sent from Kaede's phone to her mother just after 8 p.m. The picture is believed to have been taken after the girl was murdered.
Investigators are still trying to locate the suspect and where Kaede was killed, based on tracking information from her cell phone equipped with a global positioning system locater that showed the phone was switched on temporarily somewhere south of Heguri after the text message was sent from inside the town, the sources said.
Kaede's body was found abandoned in a gutter in Heguri, some 6 kilometers from her home, with abrasions and bruises. Investigative sources said earlier the killer is believed to have drowned the girl in a bathtub or basin.

Fones with GPS features is very IDEAL for folks who want to know where their FIANCEE's are Specially if they won't be seeing each other for a LONG period of time! Yeah, fones should NOT just be DECORATED like GUNS around, as it will surely be ENTICING the would-be SNATCHERS to get it - otherwise . . . |

Ayush,
Are you being serious or a prick? If you are serious, then technology is completely lost on you. Maybe Axxxr did not specify MMS, but I am sure that this is what he meant and we all seemed to understand. You see the key point is that someone got killed. A child in fact. If you are being a prick, then maybe your child or sister or mother will get kidnapped and murdered and we can all have a laugh on you.

sapporobaby you have misunderstood ayush ..i don't think he meant that in bad way,It was my mistake for not saying MMS rather than photo sms, which the originial article had specified.

The Japanese have better phone’s with more features that us western lot, so its not that far fetched to think photo sms’s may differ from mms’s!

Guys,
I was not trying to jump on him unless he was making light of this. I am well aware of the possiblities of GPS and GSM capabilities with LBS services. My only complaint was that I thought Ayush was taking the piss at someone's misfortune.
