I missed this New York Post story when it came out on October 25, but I love this kind of stuff. High school students in NYC are proving themselves to be as resourceful as ever when it comes to sneaking mobile phones past the security gates at school. Boys hide the phones behind belt buckles so when the metal detector whoops, they can blame it on the metal in the buckle. Girls hide them in bras and say the underwire is making the detector go off. They don't always get away with it. One 15 year old complains that his phone was confiscated after he sandwiched it between two pieces of bread and wrapped it in foil.

presumably they can also smuggle weapons (knives etc) the same way...

Which they do from time to time,hence the metal dectectors in american schools,their primary purpose was not to detect mobile phones i believe.

i used to work in a place that built IBM pcs, they had (hand held) metal detectors. We were allowed to hold our phone away from the metal detector, used to smuggle out loads of bits and pieces in my p800 case
