During Ramadan which extended from October 15 to November 13 this year, LG Electronics’ new handset won the hearts of Muslims who observed the sacred obligation of prayer and fast.
The new handset features indicator and alarm to inform the direction (Qiblah) and time (AJAN) of prayer for faithful Muslims who pray six times a day, facing the direction of Mecca.
The phone is especially getting popular among Saudi Arabians, devoted Muslims who take pride in being the rightful successor of Islamic tradition, KOTRA announced Sunday. Considering Muslims pray whenever and wherever they have to and even during flight while they are on trip, the LG handset has great market potential in the region, the trade promotion agency said.
LG Electronics has already launched Mecca Indicator Phone LG-F7100 in July, aiming at the markets in the Middles East and Northern Africa such as UAE, Saudi Arabia and Iran. The compass software helps the users identify the direction of Mecca wherever they are and alarm set reminds them of praying time. Earlier in September 2003, the company released LG-G5300, a Mecca-indicating GPRS handset featuring compass and direction indicating software in the Middle East. The users can find the direction of Mecca under any type of geographical condition.
Meanwhile, Nokia has 50% market share in Saudi Arabia with a full range of product line-up from low- to high-end phones and Samsung Electronics has 20%, selling only high-priced handsets in the nation.
