I’ve known for a while that VodaCom is launching 3G in December but I found out today that the official launch is on the 3rd of December!!!! Can’t wait! Haven’t heard of MTN planning to launch soon – maybe the middle of next year (not like I care about MTN much – VodaCom rulez!!!) Anyone have any idea what type of pricing plans VodaCom might use? Hopefully they’ll launch it quite cheap at first (would be a good strategy).

No idea of prices, mate. MTN on their part r shooting for EDGE in January 2005 or thereabout. MTN seems to be developing d habit of playing 2nd fiddle everywhere. In Nigeria, Glo beat them to GPRS & they are still running CSD at their trademark exhorbitant tarriff. Ha!

Yip, MTN seems to be a bit behind though. CellC, ha! They probably don't even know what 3G is. Anyway, I can't wait till it's launched! Hoping VodaCom releases it at a cheap introduction rate :-) Then we can play around with it :-)

I stand to be corrected, but I’ve heard that the pricing on VodaCom’s 3G is gonna be pretty good. No official packages have been announced yet, but (apparently), it’s gonna work out to about R2 a meg. That’s way better than R25 – R45 a meg on GPRS!! They say the bundles on 3G will be a lot larger than the current GPRS bundles (which makes sense) Can’t wait till the launch on Friday though. Don’t think I’ll give up my P900 for a 3G handset just yet, maybe when a PDA is launched with 3G. I am considering getting a 3G-enabled PC card in the mean time though – for my e-mails etc. on my laptop.

So if u wont change ur phone whats the main advantage of 3G? When I think 3G, all I see is video streaming and movie trailers.

Will be a lot cheaper for me to download e-mail using 3G instead of GPRS. Might even consider browsing sites on my laptop using 3G (was way too expensive to even consider when using GPRS).

Yeah everyone is excited about it...just to think that we'll be getting 3G way before some users in Europe and Asia.
It's official, we've been beaten to 3G on the African continent by a network in Mauritius that boats something like 200 000 subscribers.
From what I've see the handsets will be pretty expensive and you'll have to fork about R200- R500 for a contract so yeah the poor masses won't be playing around with 3G just yet...I'm still waiting to connect to Vodacom GPRS:(
MTN said they would first like to expand their network in Nigeria, have that market on lock before they consider introducing 3G in South Africa. Another problem that seems to have made them aprehensive is that there has been no clear policy on 3G in South Africa because yesterday I heard that Sentech( the national broadcast signal distributor) would also add voice capability to their UMTS-TDD network some time in 2005....we all know established companies in this country hates competition...just ask Telkom about it.

Not trying to be funny, but MTN actually lanched HSDPA like a week before Vodacom did. It's not really a "publicised" fact though - ha ha  |

@rapidblue: You're right problem is MTN had a signal out but no datacards available while Vodacom launched their service with the new datacards.
