A Beijing man has paid the equivalent of $257,400 Cdn for the ultimate in lucky cell phone numbers -133-3333-3333.

The phone number was sold this week at an auction in the Chinese capital, newspapers reported Saturday.

Chinese tradition considers three a lucky number and groups of threes even luckier. Though the number eight is the luckiest, all Chinese cell phone numbers begin with 13, making it impossible to make a number with all eights.

The reports by the Beijing Times and Beijing Morning Post didn't identify the buyer. Phone calls to the number on Saturday weren't answered.

Hotels, restaurants and other businesses in China regularly try to obtain phone numbers with groups of 8's. Those that can't wind up settling for groups of other numbers.

@axxxr - Yes! I've seen this in the dailies a couple of days back . . . As for the Chinese the number - 8 still brings the BEST of luck at all times, though I guess it was not available, that's why he settled for the #3s . . . other issues like this is a big hit in China, like in car plates - number combination!

@k700nut - What an OMEN ! We have almost the same story here in Manila, where a priest applied for a new license for his newly bought car, and the Land Transportation Office gave him with a "666" number combination ! The mad priest wants to sue the said office in return !

Its a culture thing. What is 'lucky' to u may mean nothing -or even bad luck- to me. U can have all 333s or 888s but in my country, no luck is coming ur way. U just have a number that is easy to memorise :-) ... Which is not so bad! :-D

Hes going to get a lot of bad calls because:

You know when youve tdrunk too much...stumble inside your house but remember you forgot something somewhere and want to call you mate to ask?

You pick the phone up and then you freeze and forget the num, your finger freezes on the number 3 after pressing 1 and you manage to unfreeze your finger for a split second while you accidently press call

Happens all the time
