The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) today announced the adoption of Bluetooth Version 2.0 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate). The new specification provides increased data rates up to three times current levels, and lower power consumption for longer battery life. The spec also provides simpler multi-device operation and improved BER (Bit Error Rate) performance. The faster data rates are designed for scenarios like streaming CD-quality audio, digital image transfer and laser printing. Chips with the new specification are available immediately from Broadcom and CSR, and in Q1 2005 from RF Micro Devices. The Bluetooth SIG today also laid out a roadmap for future improvements to Bluetooth. Priorities for next year include quality of service (QoS), security, and power consumption. Priorities for 2006 will include multi-cast, additional security, and long-range performance.
