The Port Authority Sunday said it was investigating the private security firm hired to guard Ground Zero after a man gained access to the site over the weekend and killed himself with a shotgun, officials said.

The body of 25-year-old Andrew Veal, a research worker from the University of Georgia, was found in the World Trade Center pit Saturday morning, lying near a shotgun.

A source said Veal may have been suffering from some personal problems, though his family has told authorities that he was very upset about the war in Iraq and President George W. Bush's re-election.

Same story from yahoo news:

A 25-year-old man from Georgia who was apparently distraught over President's re-election shot and killed himself at ground zero. Andrew Veal's body was found Saturday morning inside the off-limits site, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. A shotgun was found nearby, but no suicide note was found, Coleman said.

Veal's mother said her son was upset about the result of the presidential election and had driven to New York, Gus Danese, president of the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association, told The New York Times in Sunday's editions.

Friends said Veal worked in a computer lab at the University of Georgia and was planning to marry.

"I'm absolutely sure it's a protest," Mary Anne Mauney, Veal's supervisor at the lab, told The Daily News. "I don't know what made him commit suicide, but where he did it was symbolic."

Police were investigating how Veal entered the former World Trade Center site, which is protected by high fences and owned by the Port Authority.

The suicide victim, Andrew Veal, was discovered on a concrete slab in the construction pit near the Church Street subway entrance Saturday morning. A bottle of Jack Daniel's was by his side, and a 12-gauge shotgun lay across his body.

Authorities believe that Veal, who was engaged to be married, killed himself sometime Friday — his birthday, friends said.

Law-enforcement officials and friends said Veal, a project coordinator at the University of Georgia Research Center who also did political polling, had been depressed over the outcome of the election.

Friends also said he may have killed himself to protest the war in Iraq.

"He cared about politics, people and the state of the world," Mary Ann Mauney, his supervisor at the university, told the Athens Banner Herald. "Andrew was definitely sending a message [with the suicide]. Certainly, it was a protest."

Veal's mother, Sharon, refused to talk about the tragedy, saying only, "I am really upset."

Veal did not show up for work the day after the election and told no one about his plan to drive to New York City. He parked just a block from Ground Zero.

Regina Townsend, who lost her brother, Peter West, a Cantor-Fitzgerald employee, on 9/11, was more sympathetic.

"How warped. I feel a great loss for this man and his family," she said. "I have the greatest sorrow for a person who felt so hopeless.

"Having said that, I can't compare that to the death of my brother," Townsend said. "Peter was filled with life. His death was so unique, and he had everything to live for. He has a new grandchild on the way, and we are filled with hopefulness."

Steven Cafiero Sr. — whose son, Steve Jr., died on the 92nd floor of the south tower — had words of condolence for Veal's relatives.

"When I heard that this young man took his life, I blessed myself," he said.

"My heart goes out to the family," said Cafiero, whose son had been working as a client specialist for AON for only three weeks when he died. "One thing I would say to his family is that the wounds never heal, but time takes time."
