I believe its built into the GSM standard but few, if any, operators actually support it

Wasn't there some app, I think by S&W, that allowed you to divert messages...?

Yup, found it:

it won't be possible on the T or Z series due to the limited J2ME implementation

I don't know how that applications works, but it seems to me that it just receives an SMS and forwards it to another number automatically, hence, spending money on a new message.

Wouldn't use it!!! I pay 20 cents per SMS.

yeah, I assumed thats how it would work since its the software and not the network that is actually forwarding the message for you

Obviously it couldnt forward an sms when the phone is off though which is a bit annoying.

I wouldn't have though free SMS forwarding would be likely, even if the networks did support it - you have to pay to divert calls (generally) so I would imagine the same would apply to SMS. Of course, it would be fairly expensive as a permanent solution, but as a method of ensuring you get your messages, without having to carry around more than one handset (or, in my case, when my P800 [haven't used it since] used to run out of battery and I didn't realise until I had to go out!) it's not a bad option.

I need SMS diversion as well as call diversion occasionally because there are certain places where my (Orange UK) P910i just doesn't work because of poor signal quality. This app won't divert SMSs (or 'autoforward' as the product notes rightly describe the action) in this situation though. What I really need is the network-based solution that has been alluded too here. Does anyone have any info on that? I guess it's a question I need to put to Orange themselves too.
