Hi all,

I guess you all have realized how few shades of gray the T68 has. Only four if you count the "almost pure" ones, and a few more if you count the ones that are "tainted" (a bit greenish, reddish etc).

Due to a hardware limitation in the color screen of the T68, it is acutally possible to create many more pure shades of gray.

I have prepared a small .gif image that makes a smooth transition from dark gray to light gray using 13 shades! It is amazing how smooth and nice it looks!

Note that you cannot see this effect on your computer screen --- it is only visible on the screen of your T68.

Too bad this effect can't be used for anything useful.

Note that it is a geocities address, which means that you cannot click on the link. You must type in the address yourself in the address bar of your browser, or use copy and paste it into the address bar.

Did you type in the address by hand in the browser? It doesn't work otherwise.

That means it is possible to have a smooth grey-scaled image as background. Mind telling us your trick?

@float:

Well, the "trick" is that there is an imperfection in the type of screens that the T68 has. A pixel will be slightly brighter than it should if there are a lot of dark pixels in the same column. Therefore, by just painting with the same dark gray color in the rectangle area, you can control how much lighter you want the pixel to be by varying the height of the black area above. Therefore, a triangular black area will result in the smooth transition you see on your T68.

The bad news is that
a) it is hard to do anything useful with the effect and
b) it actually means that image quality suffer on real images.
