convergence good or bad? |

i wanted peoples opinions on this subject, as it seems to be a bit of a buzz word at present. every company under the sun seems to be trying to jump on it. none more so than mobile phones. what do people think a of mobile phones trying to be all things to all men.
will mobiles get rid of mp3 players, cameras, games machines etc.
i often wonder how good the phone is and can be at all theses things and if it will become a jack of all trades and master of none.
can all these different parts meshed together really not affect other parts? does sound quality suffer as there are other electronics near by as with cd players?
i dont know the answers but would value others opinions |

Its was getting to be that you were carrying: mobile phone, mp3 player, personal organiser, dictaphone, handheld games console, ad infinitum, i dont see much wrong with rolling it all into one product, as long as it genuinely can do all it claims.

i think thats what i am trying to find out do they really do what they say on the tin.
i like the idea of 1 device for everything but am always left a bit cold- mp3 players never sounds half as good as cd or vinyl, the cams are just ok.
maybe i just expect to much. |

Yeah, integrated devices dont seem to be as good as seperate devices (cameras being a good case in point) but give it a couple of years, and who knows? Theres talk of 5mp camera phones in the near future, dont forget convergance is still in its relative infancy.

I much prefer to carry one device with me rather than several, but I do appreciate the point made about the quality of converged functions. Convergence isn't all that new, but the number of functions involved is. Like all technology, we shall just have to be patient until it improves to the standards we are used to in dedicated devices.

i don't think we're aren't there yet where we've seen the best of the convergence devices. we've maybe gone half way or even less imo.
the bad part of these so called convergence devices aren't the technology in them.. but rather the
1.standardization... eg symbian/windowsmobile/palm OS.. or CDMA/3G.
2. price... another bad thing i feel about these so called convergence devices is that they tend to be terribly expensive. maybe with these devices becoming more and more popular and once production cycles are optimized we see economies of scale the prices might come down.
3.the network... since 3g is just kicking off in europe and it might take another 2-3 years before the rest of the world might see 3g services, the networks aren't ready to manage these devices yet. things like live streaming video are just taking off.
apart from that... the good bits..there are lots, of course a single device that does everything efficiently and really fast.

Your points about Europe are interesting, but what about the only othe rmarket on Earth, which is more advanced than Europe, Japan? Does anyone know what the current state of convergence in Japan is? Is it popular there? What is the quality of the functions like? Presumably better than in Europe.
