TV-B-Gone] is a new keychain gizmo that will let you zap any TV set. Even if it's not yours.[/img]
This kind of universal remote control runs through some 200 infrared codes that control the power of about 1,000 television models.
Mitch Altman of San Francisco, the inventor of TV-B-Gone, got the idea about ten years ago when he was out with friends at a restaurant and all were glued to the perched TV instead of talking to one another. No one was around to turn the TV off.
The gadget costs some $14.99 .

Handy in pubs and restuarants, as mentioned.
I just tend to walk over and turn it off, if I'm that bothered.

@maddav
I can see you being popular when there is some sort of sporting event on.

Well depending on the sport, I will most likely keep one eye in the event, and one eye on my friend. ( not literally )
But most other things like 'Stars in their eyes', 'X-factor' or most other Saturday evening telecrap, I will turn off before i even sit down.
