I have an unlocked Z1010 which I am trying to use on Orange in the UK.

About 5 seconds after logging onto the network, it tries to log onto 3G for Orange and then after about 30 seconds I get No Access written on the phone for about a minute before the whole procedure repeats itself.

I've set the Search Mode to Manual and selected the 2G Orange network but again 5 seconds later it switches to 3G. I can't find any other way of locking to 2G.

I've got R1G007 software on the phone.

Thanks,

Matt

I found the answer...

Can I choose between UMTS and GSM network (Z1010)

Our products follow the UMTS specification. There is no way to set the phone to utilize the two different Radio Access Networks (WCDMA and GSM) at the same time. Also it is not possible to switch between UMTS and GSM network manually.
If the UMTS network (WCDMA network) is available and of good enough quality, the mobile phone will automatically use the UMTS network.
If the UMTS network is not available or the quality is not good enough, the mobile will automatically use the GSM network.

This solution is valid for the following product and environment:

Z1010

This solution also answers the following questions:

Cannot switch from the UMTS net to a GSM net

Can I choose between UMTS and GSM

Causes of this problem:

The UMTS specification (set by 3GPP org.) states that the WCDMA network has access priority over the GSM Network. This is because of course the WCDMA network has higher capacity compared to GSM networks. There are some values, again specified by 3GPP org., which determine if a phone should change from WCDMA to GSM and the other way around, (measurements on the base stations tells the quality of the networks). The intended design for the end-user is that when-ever there is a WCDMA network available and of good enough quality, this should be used instead of GSM.

Funny though because I can lock my phone on to a 2G network all day long, and switch back to UMTS as and when I need to. I dont know if thats because I have a UMTS sim card or not.
