UK retailer Carphone Warehouse has announced a deal with music label EMI to launch Robbie Williams' next album on an MMC card, in addition to the standard online and CD release, specifically for use in mobile phones and PDAs. Not only will it have versions of all the songs, but it will also have video content as well. Carphone Warehouse intends to launch even more albums on its new mobile brand 'playmobile,' including combo cards that have both songs from artists and ringtones and wallpaper (OMG it's Robbie's half-exposed bottom again!) from the same artist.
Here's the thing, though: they never mention what DRM is going to be used to lock down the songs, and you know they've got something in there to restrict them or else they'd not be so willing to share them in digital form. And since it's unlikely that every platform that has an SD/MMC card slot will be able to use the DRM player, these will probably be of very limited use. Getting extended content features is nice, but not if you can only use it on a handful of devices. Of course, I'd love to be wrong and discover they're selling MMCs full of unencumbered MP3s.

Thats a great idea, with all the extra content, people might buy it on mmc format instead of downloading it.

I'd rather just download the songs in the way I already do (I use virgin music download) but let them supply any additional content when I buy the whole album rather than just a single track as I normally do. It might provide more incentive for people to get the whole album
this way I can put all this onto whatever media I prefer instead of being limited to mmc

mp3s are more convenient to use and archive than audio CDs/DVDs, more versatile too. If these MMCs will become popular soon, I'm sure I'd still prefer to convert them to mp3s and keep the Original as backups only.

I wonder if they'll be offering them in different card formats, i.e MMC, SD and memory stick duo. also what about price? MS duo's are more expensive than mmc and sd so will they charge more for the same album if its on a MS Duo. and one more thing, if they're offering video content how will they overcome the differences in file formats, screen sizes etc. will they taylor content for different models or will they have one standard accross the board?
