unnecessary upload of images to Esato |

while looking at the images uploaded to esato I have noticed that a large proportion appear to be from other web sites.
this means members have saved them to their computer and then uploaded them to esato and this is quite unnecessary.
Although I can't comment on how much server space we have this will clearly fill the space we do have much quicker than it needs to so I thought I might do a quick tutorial explaining how to link images into your post directly from the web site you found it on
an example:
I have found an image of a P910 on this page that I want to include in my post.
here is what that page looks like
if I now right click the P910 image and choose properties I see the following displayed
The url shown is the url of the actual picture and this can be copied into your paste buffer by dragging the mouse over the whole of it and pressing control-c
if you now create your post on esato and at the point where you want to display this image simply insert the url you have copied with immediately after it
e.g.

and this will display that image in your post without the need for your extra effort downloading it and then uploading it to esato and without the need to consume unnecessary space on esato
just a thought

....addition: should your image be hosted on a site that prevents hotlinking (the linking of images to other sites) you could always upload the image in question to dedicated image hosting services such as www.uploadit.org as well

Eheeeeem here - again ! Hmmm . . . I guess it's about time that a new rule be applied in Esato's Guidelines and Policy Board! Mods + Laffen will have the sole authority of somewhat approving the images being uploaded, if not related, sorry you go . . . As I am admitting here that majority of the uploads (unrelated ones) are of . . . mine ! As to give the database a little space to breathe . . . If possible, make a one-time deletion of all the images found in the garbage/mobile phone free zone threads As I guess, they are totally not needed anymore - as everyone here have seen them, I guess? Just a thought here from a member who have posted so much trash of images in the past . . . |

take a chill pill jojo, this is only my suggestion to an observation I made. It has nothing to do with any other mod or laffen
there is no need to enforce any new policy or rule in this matter, its just simply an awareness excercise that images don't always need to be uploaded to esato

oh dear.... this is not a blaming topic is it? Nor an 'I did or I did not' topic. It's just a suggestion to not to waste too much precious esato space.

Perhaps if we do upload an image we can also try to minimise the size and resolution.

@absinthe, I think you've partially answered a question I was going to ask!
I was going to say, if I took a picture with my digital camera at, say 1,900 x 1,400, would this take up more space on the Esato server than a 640 x 480 picture? The reason I'm asking is that Esato automatically reduces the size of pictures, so would the same picture, in 1900x1400 be the same size on the server as a picture taken at 640x480, as they both get reduced in size to the standard Esato size (which I can't remember offhand!)

There is a limit on 1Mb on the pics and size wise it's automatically sezised for best fit on the page. So just make sure the pic is less than 1Mb and the server takes care of the rest.

Is it entirely fair to be stealing the bandwidth off the other sites by hotlinking the images though?
