When is automatic e-mail check turned on, you will hear message sound, but if you don't have any new mail, no message will appear. Did you check this?

Do you even have the email/text message notification icon on your desktop screen? If the phone received a message and you don't check it, there should be a icon shaped like a yellow envelope on the top of your screen.
If you see the envelope, then you have a message or email. You can check for both from the same messaging screen. In the messaging menu, you have one option called "Inbox" and another called "Email". The "Inbox" is for text messages and the "Email" is for email. Whenever something new arrives for either, you'll see a number displayed next to the option. For example, if you have 2 new emails and one new text message, then when you go to the messaging screen, the inbox and email options will display as "Inbox (1)" and "Email (2)". If you have no new messages, it will just display as "Inbox" and "Email". |

Isn't it possible that he sent you a Flash sms?

I doubt a friend of his would send a flash SMS. Even so, wouldn't a flash SMS still ask the user whether install or not?
Probably even easier is just for him to work with a friend to test the device itself. Call a friend and ask him/her to send you an SMS and see what happens. |

or it could be that his sim card's inbox memory is full. it just happened to me. i heard a message received tone and when i checked my phone it flashed a message. it sort of prompts you to delete some messages. if you click ok. you can choose from the different folders. |

in my inbox there were only 2 messages so it's impossible to flash me a message about memory !!! |
