Virgin Trains has admitted that the design of its new trains impairs mobile phone reception and can make holding a conversation impossible.
"The company has conceded that the style of the carriages and the metal used has worsened transmission difficulties in poor reception areas.
Metallic paint used on the windows to deflect sunlight and help keep the carriages cool has added to the problems.
Ironically, the new trains have plug sockets beside seats so passengers can recharge their (Virgin) mobile phones and use laptops."
