Ericsson made a statement last Friday that The world will have almost two billion mobile telephone users by 2006 due to growth in emerging markets such as India and China.
Wow! The global population is around 6 Billion and presently there are already 1.5 billion mobile phone subscribers.
The world now has 1.5 billion mobile phone subscribers. “We can see that we are rapidly closing in on two billion mobile phone subscribers by 2006,” Svanberg said.
"At least 50 percent of our growth will come from the emerging markets. We have so much still to cover in China, India and the techno-savvy Asia-Pacific region,” he added. India’s cell phone market is adding nearly 1.8 million customers every month while in China new subscribers are rising by four to five million a month.
“A large share of our sales are in 3G (third-generation) mobile telephony and that is now being rolled out, which will give opportunities in broadband and wireless and will be a key driver for growth,” Svanberg said. “People like to stay connected all the time and high-speed 3G mobile networks allows users to access a range of multimedia services,” he said.

2 billion? that's almost one third of the world's population.
its a bit exxagerated i feel, because even though there is tremendous growth (in india) i fear it cannot be sustained for more than a few years, after which the market will stabilize.mobile phones are still expensive for a large demographic of people even here.
but people have begun to realize the importance of mobile phones... the cities and towns have embraced it to the maximum. but only when people from rural areas really adopt mobile technology we can't see such huge numbers.
even though the network is up and running in a majority of villages here, it's still not commercially viable to setup towers and networks. |

Eventually, that will happen, sooner or later. I can see now that rural area population is starting to adopt it. Who knows ,it might well be true, lets hope for the least :-)

Fast and still counting . . . I guess that's why Nokia/SE and the rest are targeting places which has 'billions' in it's - populace ! Say, like that of China and India 2 of the most populated countries in the world ! Have they manage to get only, say 40% of it's count using their branded mobiles would simply be just a great achievement. |
