although this an old phone i like mine and a few days ago i bought a COM data-cable. now i'm thinking of updating the software but i'm not sure if this can be done with this cable. if this is possible what program should i use for this and what is the best version for this phone.

the only cheap ways you can upgrade the firmware yourself:

1. a serial service cable (usually labelled as T28 cable), then buy a logon ID (USD$10) and remotely hook up to a server and upgrade. It's pay per use, good only for 1 upgrade. This is also extremely unreliable as connection can stop anytime and you may end up with a dead phone

2. a terminator dongle ($35) which allows you to upgrade different SE phones without additional purchases.

i guess the serial service cable is not the data cable. i also have a cable labeled T39 which doesn't work at all but sometimes, when connected to the PC with this cable, the phone flashes as if it's being charged. could this be a service cable or just a bad data cable and is it possibe to update the phone with some software (not online) with a serial service cable. i know Siemens phones can be updated via COM data cable. why do SE phones need such complications?

your cable will not work.. it can after some rewiring or something.. not sure check site for more details on suporting cables... search the forums...
