Dakar winner Sainct killed in Rally of the Pharaohs
Wed Sep 29, 1:04 PM ET Entertainment - AFP

CAIRO (AFP) - Three- time Dakar Rally winner Richard Sainct was killed in an accident in the desert during the fourth stage of the Rally of the Pharoahs in Egypt, local police and hospital sources confirmed.

The 34-year-old French rider crashed 285km into the first special from Baharia near the oasis at Siwa during a day of fast racing on sandy and slightly uneven ground, race organiser Massimo Garbaccio told AFP earlier from his Rome office.

There were no witnesses to the accident with organisers being alerted by riders who arrived on the scene minutes later.

"Sainct was transported unconscious but still alive to the mobile clinic. It was shortly after being admitted that he died," said Garbaccio.

"The body was transported to the hospital at Siwa and then to Cairo," he said, adding: "We're all very shocked."

A hospital spokesman added that the French rider suffered multiple injuries.

Sainct's KTM team withdrew from the race the Frenchman won in 2002, but as a tribute Thursday's fifth stage will only have one special instead of two.

The Frenchman won the Paris-Dakar three times, riding for BMW in 1999 and 2000, and KTM in 2003, and was runner-up this year.

He also rode for Japanese teams Kawasaki and Honda in his early career.
