Is there any way to establish whether or not your phone is being tapped?

say, "I'm gonna kill [insert local official's name here]", and if the police come barging in, your phone is tapped.

Alternatives include:
"Can you get those 14 kilos in tonight"
"Did you get the anthrax?"

seriously, i don't think there's a way you can tell. [addsig]

I think its more of a privacy issue and of civil rights. So its up to governments to enact laws. But, i think they need a warrant to tap your phone.

If they want to, they can do it so deceptively that the only person who knows is the person tappin, heard they could even decipher the sms you have been sending, of course with a police warrant.

ECHELON is a system run by the U.S., UK, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand governments, which scans all electronic communications around the globe for certain keywords. If those keywords are detected by the computers performing the scans the communication is examined in more detail. All forms of electronic communication can be intercepted this way; everything from phones calls to faxes to e-mails to texts.

It's not me that has anything to hide. i just would like to know. I didn't think it was at all possible to tap into MOBILE phones unless you were within a 5 meter radius. And i dont see any black vans outside my house...

You won't know if they tap.
Get real!

More important is that they can *track* you wherever you go. Your phone can be located permanently - and of course, phones of the people near you etc. It is whole new kind of police work and believe me they do read those endless listings and the do draw lines on a map. Most serious crimes here are solved thanks to tracking.

In England (maybe UK aswell) the landlines are monitored which has been said before and if you say something like "when did you last see bin laden" or something like "hows uncle bin laden" Then they tap in and the government people talk to you...its happened to my brother before and i remember posting it somehwere?

I dont think mobile phones are tapped but i reckon they will be in the future.

I doubt they would blow their whole operation and talk to you over the phone, warning you, and giving you ample time to get away...

They are most likely to listen to the key words from the computer.. put an deeper investigation before they confront you with it. They are not going to barge in your door just because you said bin laden is sitting next to me or something. I mean.. I hate police.. but they are not as stupid as the movies portrays them to be. My two cents.. on POOOO Lice.
I was born with three legs. In the
middle of my third leg, there's a
dial pad, 65k color screen, ,
and on the tip there's a icon.

I doubt they constantly search billions of websites for key words such as been lardeen or ant-trax (to be on the safe side) but it could be possible. The govt in this third world country I think are too poor to get equipment to track texts or conversations.
