Hi,

I currently have R2A041 and want to upgrade the firmware when I get a syncstation.

I bought my phone from phones4u in the UK as an unbranded/unlocked one, however I am concerned by some postings here and elsewhere that the update service checks the IMEI number to see what network you're on, then flashes the "appropriate" firmware to your phone.

I am on Vodafone. I do not want my phone suddenly branded with their Live sh*t.

Does the update service really check the IMEI, or just if the phone already has branded firmware on it?

Cheers,

Rich

P.S. I know that the update service doesn't support vodafone branding yet, but I am worried about the future :/

As far as I know the SE update service does not upgrade firmware using branded versions; you should be fine to upgrade your firmware without worrying about Vodafone's nonsense being splashed all over it. I am not an expert when it comes to the online update service, so hopefully someone can verify that what I am saying is correct.

I am not sure this is correct. The SE Update service will only update branded phones if it has a later version of the phone software for that brand. Certainly says this on the faqs. If you have a sim free phone without any branding then you 'should' be fine. If nothing else you can perform the verification and see if any update is available. Details of the update should be confirmed there. Does your phone have any vodafone tailoring at all? did the box come in an unbranded SE box or did it have vodafone on it?

Thanks for your replies!

My phone came in a bog standard SE box with no mention of Vodafone on it whatsoever - the phone itself contains no branding apart from a "Vodafone" entry in the Connectivity menu (think that is from the SIM).

It is also unlocked.

Just the IMEI thing has me worried - what if phones4u have "registered" the IMEI as being vodafone, and the update service looks at that.

Think it should be ok tho especially as there's no update for Live! on the SE site anyway...

I don't think you need to worry. I am fairly certain that the Online Update simply looks at the brand of firmware on your phone and then updated the phone with the latest version of firmware with the same branding.
If you have unbranded firmware you should be upgraded to a non-customised R2L through the online update.

yup that is correct! online update will read and scan the phone first if it will be qualified for an unpdate. =)
