Normally to flash a firmware power needs to be supplied to the chip . EEPROM. IRDA / BLUETOOTH normally requires a driver in the phone. Which is what you would be overwriting if you It would be dangerous to flash a firmware any other way than via a serial / USB connection. The DSS-20 / 25 probably have extra pins connected on them compared to other models.
