HI all,

What are the benefits of EDGE when using a 6230? I've read loads of posts where ppl are comparing phones and the 6230's EDGE capabilites are always mentioned as a plus point. Can someone plse explain to me what its used for. Thanks.

It's like GPRS, but a faster way (for data transfers).

EDGE - Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution
GPRS - General Packet Radio Service

With EDGE coding and modulation, Ehanced gprs provides faster data transfer rate and better service.

Guys I still don't get what either is.. can someone explain to me in the most basic of terms what both GPRS and EDGE are and what they can be used for other than surfing WAP sites.

Think this passage explains it quite nicely (note that is says EDGE was developed by ERICSSON no less, so why are they hardly any SE phones with it lol)

"Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) is another high-speed mobile data standard. It allows data transmission speeds of 384 kbps to be achieved when all eight timeslots are used. In fact, EDGE was formerly called GSM384. This means a bit rate of 48 kbps per timeslot. Even higher speeds may be available in good radio conditions.

EDGE was developed (by Ericsson initially) for mobile network operators who fail to win Universal Mobile Telephone System (UMTS) spectrum. EDGE gives incumbent GSM operators the opportunity to offer data services at speeds that are near to those available on UMTS networks.

EDGE also provides an evolutionary migration path from GPRS to UMTS by implementing now the changes in modulation that will be necessary for implementing UMTS later. The idea behind EDGE is to eke out even higher data rates on the current 200 kHz GSM carrier by changing the type of modulation used.

High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) and GPRS are both based on something called Gaussian minimum-shift keying (GMSK) which only yields a moderate increase in data bit rates per time slot. It is the modulation scheme that GPRS uses that limited its data speeds to 115.2 kbps.

EDGE on the other hand is based on a new modulation scheme that allows a much higher bit rate across the air interface. This modulation technique is called eight-phase-shift keying (8 PSK). It automatically adapts to radio circumstances and thereby offers its highest rates in good propagation conditions close to the site of base stations. This shift in modulation from GMSK to 8 PSK is the central change with EDGE which prepares the GSM world (and TDMA in general) for UMTS."

to sum it up, GPRS has faster data rates than GSM and EDGE has faster data rates than GPRS.

.... so EDGE is a fast form of data transfer... but this data transfer is it only for WAP? How else can data transfer be utilised? If it is only for WAP and downloading content from WAP sites its not like its going to make all that difference to me.

as with GPRS you can use EDGE when using your phone as a modem to get higher transferrates

It can be used for wap or possibly if you have a browser like opera on the p900 it could be used for that. also i suppose it could be used for streaming video.
it may also be used for browsing the internet via your laptop if you can do that.
on a phone like the 6230 it really isnt that much of a winner unless like I said you want to hook it up to your laptop.
