How important is popularity to the post of moderator? Is it more essential for a moderator to be popular with the rank and file even if that means picking a candidate who isn't as capable in the job as another candidate?

I don't believe being popular with the crowd is more important than actual qualities to get the job done.

In fact I fear it may backfire if a popular yet inadequate person would get a position.

In other words: I think qualities to do the job should be the only criterium... things such as postcount or popularity with a crowd of frequent posters says very little imho..... especially as this corwd tends to change over time... whereas moderators are expected to perform a somewhat longer period and have to be capabelt o deal with ALL members.... not just the 'in crowd' so to speak.

on this i have to agree. I am continually amazed at how people seem to want to make their presence count more by pointing out psts counts or length of stay or whatever. But that is a whole different topic and getting old too already

This thread on the other hand could be very interesting as it might actually show what members think moderators should be.

if the members are anywhere near right remains to be seen of course

In any case i find this thread interesting (and sometimes quite amusing) so let's not spoil the discussion shall we

The @ sign is considered by me as a way to address members with 'Nettiquet'. I don't think there's a problem in that. Those who like to use it may do so and those who don't like it, simply don't use it. It's that simple. Let's not discuss this here! ;-) Btw, who was the first mod here at Esato whom Laffen chose?
