With absolute success the Olympic telecommunications network of the GREEK TELECOME(OTE) corresponded in the complex and complicated organisation of the Olympic Games, offering completed services of picture, data and voice.
For 17 continuous days, the network of OTE completely cover the increased needs of 16000 athletes and their escorts from 202 National Olympic Committees, 21500 representatives of media, visitors, workers and volunteers, in 60 Olympic installations nationally and in other 50 non-Olympic installations, as Ministries, hotels etc.
For the first time in Greece, a five digit telephone network was used with success at the duration of the Games that was designed and developed by OTE for the national connection of all Olympic installations.
In statements of OTE, a 38% increase of the telephone movement was achieved to 200 international destinations in August comparing with August 2003, with absolute success in service. At the same time, OTE marked the following records:
- 100% availability in the circuits of transport of picture, from all the spaces of conducting the Games, to International Radio-television Centre(IBC) with continous operation.
- Production of 3700 hours of live radio-television program, conventional and high density (HDTV) from Athenian Olympic Radio-television (AOV) and transmission via the network of OTE.
- Transmission more than 10000 hours worldwide via the Greek satellite Hellas-Sat 2
- 100% availability in the circuits of radio comments by all the athletic installations to IBC and from there to abroad.
- 100% availability in the signal of cable television with 60 channels that OTE transmitted from IBC to all the Olympic installations of Attica.
- 99,9999% availability in the international radio-television circuits with total digital capacity almost 4 Gbit/sec, a size that it constitutes the biggest in the Olympic Games history and unprecedented success on international level.
- 99,997% availability in the services of voice (PSTN, ISDN)
The records of the commercial network TETRA of OTE (OTELink) were exceptional, which served all the needs of radiocommunication of users at the period of the Games of OEOA Athens 2004, International Airport Athens, the Organism of Port Piraeus, Attica Road, the Attica Underground etc. At the duration of August and in the total of the Olympic cities, 44 stations were used in Attica and 23 in remainder Greece. 11 millions calls were made compared to 4.7 millions in April 2004, before the period of the Olympic preparation, without any functional problem.
Equally important was the contribution of OTE in the growth of the safety system of the Olympic Games(C4I), contributing in the secure conduct of the Games and receiving gongratulations on international level.
Irreproachable was the behavior of the telecommunications infrastructure of the Organism in the Olympic installations where alternative lines had been drawn as a reserve. For the record, these were used very little.
Essential in the success of this project was so much the permanent presence of 1500 executives of OTE inside the Olympic installations nationally as well as the personnel that worked in various services of OTE in Attica and in the other Olympic cities.
