"Olympic Hero Message" was the name of the service that Telstra offered to customers at the duration of the Olympic Games in Athens. The particular service gave the possibility to the subscribers of the network of Telstra to send SMS to all the members of the Olympic Mission of Australia. According to current statements of Telstra, more than 28000 written messages were sent the last two weeks to the Australian athletes supporting them in their efforts of winning medals.

And while most Australians, simply wanted to express their support via SMS, some people over reacted... Ian Thorpe had two proposals of marriage from two fanatic admirers, while someone asked him to give his gene that is responsible for his exceptional abilities. A 19 years old woman wrote to Thorpe: "This must be the maddest thing that I have done in my life. I didnt know you, but when I saw you on TV I saw something special in you, that I have never seen in anyone else..."

The team of women of swimming of Australia had 6 proposals for a personal date after their first victory. However, the most popular athletes of the "Olympic Hero Message" service were Ian Thorpe and Jana Pittman, who received roughly 2000 SMS. Many of them were small children: "Dear Ian. You are my hero, I want to become a champion like you. Am watching you each evening and my father records you on video. I am very happy that you won. You are the best in all the world."

Another child wrote to Ian: "Gongratulations for the golden medal! I like to play a lot with Playstation, however I cannot do this lately because my parents watch the Olympic Games on TV".
