A campaign has begun in Africa for the collection of electronic signatures via written messages. Concretely an alliance of five international and African organisms, encourage subscribers of mobile telephony to use their mobiles to participate in the collection of signatures via SMS, in order to press the governments of African states to sign jointly the "Protocol on the Rights of Woman in Africa", of the African union. According to recently published statement of the alliance, those who wish to express their support in this protocol, should send a written message in + 27 832 933934 with the word "petition" as well as their name. That specific number is based in South Africa.
The "Protocol on the Rights of Woman in Africa" was adopted by the African Union the previous year. However it was not possible to be applied, while the 29 from 53 member states of the Union have signed the protocol, only the islands Komoros, a small island state between Mozambique and Magadaskar has adopt the protocol. This campaign via SMS has an aim on one side to sensitise the citizens with regard to the protocol and on the other side to practise pressure in the governments to apply the protocol.
Statements with regard to the campaign were made from Firoze Manji, director of organism that played a leading part in her organisation. "As long as we know it is the first time where the technology of short written messages in big scale is used in Africa, for the promotion of human rights. Thanks to this method, written messages offer the possibility in those who they do not have access toI nternet of signing in favour of the campaign, while we take the advantage the fact that the users of mobile telephones are 8 times more from the users of e-mails in Africa."
