I just got one of the first proto's out there . I'm VERY VERY happy with it. Coverage is obiviously very low atm but in Las Vegas and London you can get the full potential of Wi-Max no problem. Im getting peak rates of 10 Mbit/s and lows of 1 mbit/s. For the moment, Samsung is the only maker with a proto out but my contact says they are about to contact SE about a proto SMARTphone with Wi-Max. This made me drool. Imagine downloading movies off of your smartphone at broadband speeds. Anyway, the Samsung is running on PocketPC (urgh I know), and is a pretty good phone. Ill give you guys some SS's later. Anyway, i just wanted to gloat .
Some things Wi-Max will offer:
Real time gaming
Streaming Music and Movies
Downloading Music and Movies
Much More

Sorry guys, phone is coming out in 18 months in selected markets in the US and maybe the U.K.. Availibiliy in European Markets are actually being discussed as Im posting this.
Although, the company my contact works for says that the technology may be released in New York and London if they get a Defense Department contract.
Wi-Max is truly awesome and so are it's developers etc.
If you guys have any questions just ask me, and sorry no pics, im not allowed (I'm one of the only people with the phone so they made the color specific to each person who has it. Meaning if they saw this post with the phone they would know im the leak.) just screenshots. |

The phones are no big deal. It's WiMax that's great. Not sure on the Asian front, Ill have to ask.
Something that's great about WiMax is first of all, when it's officially released it has a better range and will have better coverage than normal cell phones. You can use your WiFi base stations to use it so sometimes you wont even need a "WiMax" card. (It will come built into computers in the near future as well as come it PCIMCA cards). We might even get approval from the FAA to use it on Airplanes (again for the Defense Department, but maybe theyll make it available to passengers ). |

Wi-Max running on the 1.9 GHz band (what it will be run on with cell phones most of the time) won't take any extra battery life. On the 2.5 Ghz (when using Wi-Fi) it will. |
