According to a survey by LinuxInsider, Mac users are more literate than those on Windows. The survey looked at several online PC forums, using a series of methods for rating the literacy of the contributions, and compared them to contributions on Macintouch. It concluded: 'Not only were [Mac users'] ratings significantly higher than those given Slashdot's contributors, and thus better than those given text from the PC sites, but the vocabulary was larger too...the Macintouch stuff had 870 unique words to only 517 for the combined PC sites.

'Overall, the results are pretty clear: Mac users might not actually be smarter than PC users, but they certainly use better English and a larger vocabulary to express more complex thinking.'

my initial thought was... what a croc... but then I thought about it and all the people I know who use mac are professionals and many in the graphic design and other arts cetegories so perhaps the statistics are right

but then because mac is more used by that group these days it would make sense that they are more literate perhaps suggesting, for that reason, that such a comparison is probably not a fair comparison anyway

hmmm...

hmm... that's something to ponder over.

The trouble with all of these types of surveys is that they generalise too much.

I know for a fact that not ALL Mac users are more literate than ALL Windows users, which is what's suggested by this survey. Mac users are often involved in industries such as design, film and music where its creativity not literacy thats required!

Another Nielsen//NetRatings survey from July 2002 found that Mac users are more educated, have higher incomes and are more Web-savvy than Windows users.

However, this could just be because less well-educated people often earn less, and therefore are more likely to go for the cheaper Windows PC option when buying a computer.

so we now have two posts pointing out it's graphics and design professionals that make up a large portion o fthe mac market segment. How this make them more literate though?

Is a graphic desigenr any more literate than say, an economist, a professor, a surgeon, or any other professional that falles outside the 'mac scope'?

Probably not.

What makes the results is that most of the 'big masses' use PC. But we already knew that.....
