The animations that come with the K700i that you can insert into your SMS messages are great, but I wanted to create my own animations. Is this possible, and if so, what do I need to create and upload EMS messages to the phone?

almost certainly these animations are built into the firmware so you definitly cannot add to those.

there is an option in "add item" (when writing an SMS) which says "picture (other)" but for me that is empty and the manual gives no clue what the criteria are for pictures to be selectable there, there I would guess they would have to be of similar pixel size etc as the existing ones.

Try adding one into your pictures folder and see if it is available for selection there

Those are in gif format in se, and wbmp(black&white bmp file) in nokia or siemens. They must be at small size (about 50x50) and smaller than 1kb. Im able to add and send pictures in sms on t230 but my operator charges me 2sms for 1pic. Till now this was true, maybe newer phones dont allow this or have some other tip of ems files.

The images need to be 32 x 32 pixels pure black and white saved in WBMP (Wireless Bitmap) format.

Try this:

In Photoshop, create your desired image as 32 x 32 pixels size using pure black and white colours, no shades of grey.

Save as a GIF file

Go here: http://www.teraflops.com/wbmp/

And use the online tool to create the WBMP file.

Send that file to your phone, then when writing an SMS, Choose "More > Add Item > Picture" and select the image you sent to your phone...

The 32x32 pixel requirement may not be necessary but I've not tested with sizes other than those already in the phone.
