The former oil minister of Kuwait writes for the Arab Times Online:

By Ali Al-Baghli
Former Oil Minister

Time and again we have been saying technology is a double-edged sword. You can use it to do good or bad. In the 1990s, fundamentalists in the National Assembly (Sunnis and Shiites) were against giving permission to people to install satellite dishes on their rooftops. They said satellite channels destroy the morals of the country. They even criticized the CNN and the Egyptian satellite channels because these channels beamed one program showing an Egyptian belly dancer. Today there is not a single house in Kuwait which does not have a satellite dish on its rooftop and the people who benefited from this phenomenon are those who were against it.

Speaking about the mobile phones - this magic tool has transformed the world into a small village, which one saw only in fiction films, such as James Bond movies and others. The use of this tool was strongly opposed by the Islamists because from their point of view it caused moral destruction in the country and facilitated youngsters (boys and girls) to meet in secret. Again the beneficiaries of this tool are the extremists because it can be used to carry out terrorist acts.

Another novelty to be soon marketed in Kuwait is the Islamic mobile phone. This phone is programmed to display prayer calls in 5,000 cities all over the world. Additionally it gives the direction of Al-Qibla, no matter where you are. The phone also includes the entire text of the Holy Quran written in Othmani text and its instant translation into English. The mobile also boasts voices of 40 famous prayer callers, in addition to a vibrator alarm to remind the faithful that is time for prayer.

Undoubtedly, this tool has been developed by people whom our extremists call non-believers and even demanded they be beheaded. Since the early days of Islam, extremists have invented nothing to benefit the religion, beginning with the microphone which calls the faithful to prayer up to the Islamic mobile phone, because they are only specialized in shouting at the top of their voices - to say all others are non-believers. On the other hand, there is a cellphone with a built-in device called the Bluetooth. This device is being used by thousands of people and is most beneficial to engineers and medical staff because of the voice and view facility.

This new device has sent shock waves in Kuwait because some young boys and girls make wrong use of it and the Ministry of Justice was prompt in forming a committee - comprising legal and legislative experts in addition to attorneys - to regulate its use. If what we have heard is right, the reaction is shameful. The Bluetooth is like a knife - you can use it in the kitchen while cooking or to kill someone. It is also like a 'safe sex' tool mostly used by whores to prevent pregnancies. Can we prevent people from using knives and 'safe sex' tools... just because some are making wrong use of it?

Good thing my 'bluetooth' is activated at night when I go to bed, while my female chihuahua sleeps beneath my bed
