If i were to purchase a Sony Ericsson phone (e.g. k700) from either dubai or bangkok, would i be able to use it in london?
would i need to unlock the phone?
are there any drawbacks to buying phones from abroad?
will they be cheaper?
thanks,

If it's an unlocked triband it should work on any GSM network worldwide.
(Not sure what's up with that 850Mhz vs 900Mhz band stuff in the States though) |

Hi,
well purchasing a phone outside EU does not give you international warranty..So if you ask me then pay extra and buy peace of mind...
U will not want to fly back to Dubai to change a faulty phone as compared to walking down the street and get it fixed from a SE center..
However if you choose to buy abroad then do keep the bill/box/manual and check all items..Make sure that the phone is unlocked you can check that by going into the service menu and check if any locks applicable..!

just so you know, service menu is >*<<*<* and lock type menu is <**< the way you can tell is if the third menu down (sp i think it says) has a closed/open padlock.
also be careful where you buy it from as a lot of places will try and rip you off (i speak from experience) and they just give you a phone with no box of manual or anything. also the manual will be in thai or dubaian (sorry for the lack of geographical knowledge - after all, i AM only 13)

thanks for the feedback guys!
apart from needing to buy an adaptor for the plug unit, and having to unlock it, is there anything else i would need to change or look out for?
has anyone ever bought a phone from abroad?
if so, what did YOU look out for?
Thanks again!

You just need a plug adapter. Phones in Dubai and Bangkok are generally unlocked. If you buy from duty free shops in Dubai, it's pretty safe. Bangkok... stick with large reputable stores like department stores, mobile networks, or SE shop.
Problem with small shops overseas is many will scam you. Give you used/refurbished/stolen/rebuilt-from-scrap units, or say a T630 but with T610 under the shell. They might also switch the original battery with fake ones, remove accessories, etc. The list is long and scary.
You can check the IMEI on the unit (via keystroke and label) and the box and they should all match.
There is no international warranty but in general SE service centres in UK will try their best to fix your unit, provided it's not one with Chinese language interface. |

omg! if my imei was 123456.... and legit i'd be well pleased with myself! but something tells me that will never happen to anyone... that is shouting altered imei!! which, by the way, is illegal

Recently bought a T105 in Bangkok as my T610 was stolen. Phone works great. It came with a manual in English and one in Thai. Charger works fine. No need to unlock when I came back to the UK. Just make sure you get everything you want when you buy the phone. Havnt tried taking to se for a problem or update though! |

You can always download a manual from the SE website so that is not a big problem at all. |

If you're going to buy abroad... test the unit there outright from its functions, features, memory (card), keypad, the ability to call - down to the little details: battery, casing and other accessories with it.
