Sony Ericsson launches Consumer Game Challenge 2004
15 July 2004
The Sony Ericsson Game Developers Challenge 2004 has challenged developers to create the best Java games in five genres, including Action/Adventure, Sports, Role-Playing Games (RPG’s), Platform and Puzzle games, for the Sony Ericsson Z1010, K700 and Z500, offering cash prizes, global marketing opportunities and commercial distribution. The games from the Sony Ericsson Game Developers Challenge 2004 will be promoted globally to consumers over www.sonyericsson.com.
“More than 130 Java games were submitted, and we have performed testing of all the games to make sure they run properly on the phones and are good enough to be commercially distributed after the competition. We are now down to some 50 new games for consumers to play and vote on. We are hoping that this activity will stimulate increased interest among consumers for Sony Ericsson mobile phones and our entertainment offering,” says Ulf Wretling, director and head of Content Development for GSM/UMTS phones at Sony Ericsson.
“This competition is the first to give consumers a unique chance to evaluate applications that have not yet hit the market, demonstrating Sony Ericsson’s commitment to stay in tune with consumer demand at the same time as third party applications are made a natural part of our product offering,” says Rikko Sakaguchi, Senior Vice President and Head of Product & Application Planning for GSM/UMTS phones at Sony Ericsson.
The results of the consumer voting will determine which 20 games will go to the finals and be evaluated by a jury from Sony Ericsson and the wireless gaming industry. The aim is to select one winner from each of the major regions of the world, to be announced on September 3, 2004.
The three winners of the competition will each get a $7,000 USD cash prize, Java verification paid for by Sony Ericsson through the JavaVerified™ program (www.javaverified.com), and prominent placement on Sony Ericsson Fun & Downloads (www.sonyericsson.com/fun) which is promoted as an integral part of the product offering. The winners of the Sony Ericsson Game Developers Challenge will be the first partners for consideration for pre-loaded content or top downloads links on coming MIDP 2.0 phones from Sony Ericsson.
In addition, all of the submitted games in the competition will be commercially distributed through the Sony Ericsson Application Shop (www.sonyericsson.com/applicationshop), so developers can start making money on their game. And naturally developers will keep the rights to their own game.
