They would find out what brand and model the IMEI belongs, too and possible what service provider, depending if it is locked to them.

Here in Manila, police are 'inutile' -why because thay are the ones who stole commuter's celfones then they will bring it to celfone shops and have it sold Of course, so the scheme will not be 100% obvious to the viewing/buying public, they will have some accomplices that will do the job for them. Ironically, we now have the 'Text your Stolen Fones to Us' scheme sponsored the by national police, wherein snatching victims (celfones) will just send sms to the proper authorities to report their stolen fones Hmm . . . if we are to go back with my first statement and conclude the 2nd one - how the hell will they solve the problem Will just result to a futile operation + loss of money for the sms sent

Long and rather not to the point story, if you forgive my saying so. The police will be able to determine at least which brand and model the IMEI belongs to. May I ask why you want to report your phone stolen but with a different IMEI? It had better not be insurance fraud as they will double check your police report against your service file so two different IMEI numbers will probably be noticed.

hahahaha yes.... and just where do you think the insurance company gets the money to buy brand new phones for fraudsters such as yourself??????

By raising the premiums for everybody that takes out insurance and that includes the vast majority of people who would NEVER commit fraud.

You have a phone, count your blesings and just pray that nobody will steal it.

Totally agree with everyone about teh insurance. Having everyone pay more so that you may get a free phone. This is kind of off topic but hopefully someone can answer me because it is an imei question as well.

If a victim reports their phone is missing and sends their imei to their service provider, does the service provider have the ability to lock that phone so that no one can activate or use that phone on that certain service provider?

which is strange considering the IMEI-db is international.... here it's the police that blocks the IMEI... (or so I've been told) although they start off by 'spamming' the phone with text messages to return it to the nearest police station as it is listed as stolen

Apparently this worked well as people could not sell the phone on... however I'm sure they've found a way around it (something like altering IMEI's) by now

But yes phones can be blocked to all use (at least nationally) by blocking the IMEI number by the sp.

Just because insurance companies are crooks doesn't mean we can be crooks =)

well thats wierd, because i own a cell phone store, and a "customer" brought in a phone that he was selling. It was used, fairly brandnew. It was a phone that was locked to "A" service provider. I put in "A" sim card into it and it didn't work, no reception bar sim card blocked, something like that. I unlocked the phone put in a "B" sim card and it works, I put back in the "A" sim card still doesn't work, flashed it and the same error occurs. Any help?
