SIM card types |

I've noticed that there are some variations in the design of SIM cards, and I wondered if anyone knew what different types are around. Are some incompatible with different types of phone?
Mine, for example, is a SIM that I got with my old Orange PAYG Sony CD5 and has an image of an envelope on it with the number 10 (I guess that means maximum 10 SMS on the SIM) and a book with the number 90 (maximum 90 phone numbers?) and a rectangle with a diamond, the number 07 and JT on it. I have no idea what that means!
I upgraded to a J5e, and the SIM works fine in that. What worries me is that I once tried putting the SIM in an old Philips phone and all the numbers got messed up and it had a lot of problems. I suppose different phones might store data differently on the same media, but it's a little worrying. I'm about to buy a T610 (I'll miss the jog wheel), so what're the chances of the SIM being compatible? Is there any way of finding out?
(Sorry if that's too much text!)

Some new sims wont be compatible with older phones.
But all sims should be compatible with most if not all NEW phones. Im not an expert on sim technology, but i know some sim cards use a different voltage than others. The most common is 5v (i think) whilst some sims are 3v or 7v.
Some older phones use 3v sims, and cannot use a sim with a higher voltage.

I got my new phone yesterday, and the new SIM has 2 more large connections on it compared to my old SIM. The odd thing is that they look like they've been used before (scratched), but the contacts in the T610 only go to the same 6 as the old phone. It also doesn't have all the weird info on the back, although putting it in my old phone reveals that it seems able to hold 20 text messages.
