Just had it confirmed!
I was listening to the radio on the way home from work and there was a story, on Norwegian radio NRK P3, about network suppliers and phone manufacturers and their use of forums like Esato Forum.
There was interviews with several of the bosses in network, suppliers and mobile phone suppliers. They ALL confirmed they use different forums to, basically, do maket research.
They are using the forums as active members and “infiltrate” the world of us “mobile nerds”. ( This specific boss did correct himself and explained that he ment the world of those who are active and over avarage interested in the use of mobile phones.)
They had all seen there had been “flaming” towards their own trademark and later realised it was actually a competiting trademark who had done it.
Further on there was mentioning of the positive and negative sides of such “high rank” people doing this kind of research. It was recognised by them all that it was the best way to get the honest info they needed to be able to deliver the best product possible.
I was not surprised to hear this at all.
I have been in touch with “all” the different areas of mobile telephony and they have all told me they are using at least one forum to gather user information. This is a way for them to ask us what we think of them without revealing their true identity and thereby get a trust worthy answer.
So, guys; For all of you who has asked this question in here or have been wondering if “THEY” are listening to us: Yes they do!

Why don't they just ask customers for their opinions? Rather than going undercover?!?

Customers dont always like giving suggestions cos they feel they are being bugged. Where as people like us actually enjoy talking and consulting about phones and features etc. Personally i think they would be doing themselves a favour by giving prototypes and beta demo models to us to give a judgemental and critical appraisal of such phones. If the likes of ourselves are satisfied then the majority of their target market will also be covered.

The word "Geek" is not used in the Norwegian language but I guess that would be whant he ment since he corrected himself.
We were called "Proffesional Critics" as well wich I think is a word that does cover our interest in mobile phones quite well.

Oooer! Kinda makes you look over your sholder (metaphorically speaking, of course! )
On the other hand, it's reassuring in a way, that people are here and hopefully taking note of our hopes, concerns, and complaints.
Not so reassuring that people from other manufacturers come along and possibly start flame wars bigging up their products

So I wonder who on this forum is actually an undercover 'spy'?
It's a good idea because there is a lot more useful knowledge & opinions in a forum like this than in the rest of their customers put together!

@orangeman. Yes I believe they should do that too. But maybe not ask us, but have a means such as a SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS on their websites that you have to register for. And actually have dedicated representatives who actually receive these messages and relay the information to their superiors.

@JAGUY85
I don't think that would be the same. In a case like that you are talking "straight to their face" (knowing how some people behave in here some times I'm afraid that it would not be taken seriously) whilst in a forum like this the "undercover agents" can participate in the discussion as one of us to get more accurate information.
(Hmmm... Maybe I ought to apply for a job at just to browse Esato all day ) |
