My opinion is to get an athlon 2.7 or 2.8 with a chaintech nforce2 spp motherboard and a gigabyte radeon 9800 pro 128 mb. What do you propose?

Hmmm... You propose me less processing power for more money. Not a good deal.

ok what's you price range?
by athlon 2.7 or 2.8, i assume you mean 2700+ or 2800+ right? that will be a solid performer, that combination and if you can get it for around £250-350, i would call it a good deal. That's with nothing else, obviously. |

well i'm kinda a pentium fan i always considered intel products as reliable and fast ones, yet it's hard to say anything without looking at the price you want to pay (which we btw don't know )
my choice would be:
a gigabyte or an asus motherboard
p4 3.0e
and of course nothing else than x800 from ati (well you could consider 6800 but i think x800 is a better choice(i'm not very thrilled with the huge size and two (!!) power connectors of 6800)
but then again most users don't have a problem with that )

@jim: you're the man! AMD and MSI rules... My suggestion: MSI KV8 motherboard, AMD Athlon 3000XP+ boxed and ATi Radeon 9800 Pro

All comes down to likes and preferences really:
At home I use a gigabyte NF2 (N400Pro2 I think board)
AMD XP 2500 (Oc'd to hell and back)
1 GB kingston
Chaintech GeForce Ti4200
Solid gaming machine, though admitedly farcry shows it to its knees.
Personally I'm an AMD/Nvidia fan. (So any combination you make there = win ) but no matter which way you go AMD/Nvidia, AMD/Ati, Intel/Nvidia, Intel/Ati you'll find at least 4-5 stat pages that tells you each one is king.
You'll also get lots of |

at home I have : ABit NF7-series motherboard, 512mb Corsair PC3200ram and an AMD Athlon 2400XP+ currently running at 2,5 ghz (2,0ghz orginally) I love AMD because they're cheap, fast and reliable
