850/900 or 1900? confused. |

What band(s) is/are more popular with the US carriers? Low or high? It seems that if the 1900 is more prevalent then roaming will be easier because US GSM phones all use 1900. However if the carriers tend to go more with 850/900 then my roaming would be highly dependent on 1900 being more widely used. Does anybody have stats on this? I am a T-Mobile customer thinking about getting a T630 but the T637 seems to have slightly better features.

T-Mobile uses 1900. From what I understand Cingular uses 850 and I have no idea about AT&T Wireless.

The 850 and 1900 bands are used by AT&T WS. Though many areas still use the 1900 band (Texas for example), AT&T WS is implementing and heavily trying to promote the 850 band (East Coast for example) which can be seen by the deal they made with SONY Ericsson to give free T226's to customers with T68i's, living in the areas they are implementing the 850 band in. Cingular WS also uses both bands.
T-Mobile only uses the 1900 band for the USA and the 900 and 1800 for out of the USA. Smart!!!

The 850mhz is a more convenient band than the 1900mhz band due to it's longer wavelengths. This means that it can penetrate walls better than the 1900mhz, providing better coverage in buildings. |

Here in Europe GSM 900 is frequency number 1. Then comes 1800. GSM 900 and also 850 (in America) have wider and better coverage and also better penetration - as RichLok said already.
Unfortunately there a very few 4-bands mobile phones in the market yet (GSM 850/900/1800/1900). But if you travel a lot in the world, you probably need that quad-band phone. I hope that SonyEricsson will make its first quad-band phone too.
BUT I can't understand why US operators did not choose the GSM 900? Is that frequency used by police or medical personelle? |

Dunno... FCC are a bunch of idiots.. in regards w/ quad band phones, you're better off with a Motorola v400 / v600 from Cingular. Both are subsidy unlocked (unlike AT&T's) and they're both quad band phones. The Moto v300 is only tri-band (1900/1800/900). Don't know of many manufacturers that make quad band phones. |
