Philips Semiconductor today announced, “Separate, integrated single-package WiFi and Bluetooth chips for smart phones and portable devices.” The hope is that phone makers will be able to add in both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth much more cheaply.

That is correct, however a bluetooth chip is around $4, while a wifi chip is $10. that shows you that a Wifi chip is more than twice as much than a BT chip.

Remembering also that its not just the cost of the chip, its the effect the chip has on battery life and the processing power and software overheads to drive it.
But its all good news if small devices can be improved or made smaller through such development. |
