| Chicxago (IL) - Its no secret that cell phones are among the least useful tools when it comes to typing text. A small suburban Chicago firm however believes that it has found the key to accelerate data entry on your phone - simply by changing the keypad matrix to a QWERTY-style layout. |

"Its no surprise that clever ideas to simplify data entry on phones mainly originate in the US"
The above is a quote from the article posted by Lynx69; it's quite ironic considering how badly written the article is and furthermore, one has to ask, why is it no surprise?

True, i dont really like it because you will have to get used to a completely new keypad layout and the layout on the 7600 is hard enough to master

Most Europeans and Asians text a lot and have become used to the current system, ironic, since a similar point was made in the article as evidence of why a QWERTY system would be better.

Its crap. It took me less than a week to get used to multitap. 95% of time I don't have to look at the screen to check if I typed the correct letter. |

Since this is an American invention I am presuming that the chap who came up with the idea was primarily thinking about the American market, although there are some strong references to Europe in the article. Texting isn't a problem for most people outside of the Americas because we have been doing it for longer and more often than they have. The cultural differences between the U.S. and Europe for example exacerbate the situation, most Americans drive if they are going somewhere, many Europeans will use public transport, and hence they have more opportunities to text.
